Vinkeveen Plassen, Saturday October 4, 2014 – After a year of planning, organization and worldwide qualifying tournaments the first competitors have finally begun to arrive at the Venkeveen Plassen venue, just outside Amsterdam, for the 4th Hobie Fishing World Championship presented by Rhino-Rack.
The Australian team of eight, including the current world champion Richard Somerton from Melbourne in Victoria and 2011 world champion Scott Baker from Mornington in Victoria lead the team. The remaining six competitors who are all experienced kayak tournament anglers are appearing in their first world championship. Brett Crowe, Kevin Varty, Simon Morley, Patrick McQuarrie, Jason Reid and Jonathan Chen all won their places in this year’s world championship by finishing first or second in one of three world championship qualifying rounds that were held in different Australian locations.
While the Aussie contingent, are all experienced anglers, some with international tournament and recreational fishing experience, none have targeted all three species that they will be chasing in the world championship. This is a typical scenario that is reflected in the bios of many of the competitors in all teams from outside of the Netherlands.
Anglers from the 20 nations seeking the prized Hobie Fishing World Championship crown, will arrive tomorrow for check in. The sense of anticipation and excitement already obvious in the Australians will grow as the North American, Asian, European, New Zealand and Israel teams begin rolling in to Vinkeveen.
Even as this report is being prepared more eager early arrivals are appearing at the event location. Ian “DizzyFishHarris from the United Kingdom and Ivan Pedro Aspas Aznar from Spain have joined in the early excitement.
The tournament’s past reputation, while always a highly competitive and fiercely fought event, remains an occasion where liked minded people who share a great passion get together and socialise, talk fishing, make lasting friendships and go away a richer person for having been part of this truly unique event. The 2014 Hobie Fishing World Championship presented by Rhino-Rack is sure to continue this exceptional tradition started in Port Macquarie, Australia 4 years ago.
